Hidden Gems: Meet Manuel Barajas of Tierra Sana Wellness Center
Article from VoyageDenver Magazine
Today, we’d like to introduce you to Manuel Barajas.
Hi Manuel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Denver’s Globeville neighborhood, the youngest of six children and the son of immigrant parents. From them, I learned the value of hard work, resilience, and commitment. I’ve carried those values with me for the past 27 years in my career as a fire sprinkler fitter—a path that has provided stability and a strong sense of purpose.
But even with that foundation, I struggled privately with anxiety and depression for several years. I went on and off medication to manage it. While medication helped in some respects, it also left me feeling numb and disconnected. I didn’t feel fully present in my own life. Over time, I realized that although it was treating certain symptoms, it was also taking away parts of me that I didn’t want to lose. I knew something had to change.
That’s when I began learning about psilocybin as a natural therapeutic option. After thoughtful consideration, I decided to explore it for myself. The experience was transformative. It allowed me to reconnect with myself, with my emotions, and with my sense of purpose. It has now been four years since I stopped taking medication, and I feel stable, grounded, and genuinely well. I don’t feel the need to return to pharmaceuticals because I’ve found a different kind of balance.
Going through that journey gave me deep empathy for others who are struggling. I understand what it feels like to search for relief and to want something that truly helps—not just something that manages symptoms. When Colorado changed its laws to allow regulated psilocybin services, I saw an opportunity to be part of something meaningful.
I am now a licensed facilitator registered with the State of Colorado, and I’m in the process of opening a healing center in Denver, which is currently under construction. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where people can address challenges like depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, grief, and substance misuse—or simply find a sense of stability and clarity in their daily lives.
For me, this work isn’t just professional—it’s personal. I’ve lived the struggle, and I’ve experienced healing. Now, I want to help others find their way forward.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been smooth sailing. This is an entirely new industry, and there isn’t a clear, established path to follow. Oregon was the first state to legalize psilocybin for therapeutic use, which has provided some guidance for other states. But Colorado’s laws differ from Oregon’s, and because this field is still evolving, regulations continue to shift as new research and real-world experience shape best practices.
There’s also the challenge of overcoming decades of stigma. For many years, psilocybin was misunderstood, which created fear and hesitation around its potential as a therapeutic tool. Fortunately, credible research from respected institutions — including Johns Hopkins University — has helped bring legitimacy to the conversation and highlight its benefits when used responsibly and in a regulated setting.
On a personal level, starting and running a business is completely new territory for me. After nearly three decades in the trades, stepping into entrepreneurship has been both exciting and challenging. I’m navigating unfamiliar ground, learning as I go, and building something that hasn’t really existed here before. But even with the obstacles, I believe in the mission — and that belief keeps me moving forward.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tierra Sana Wellness Center?
Tierra Sana Wellness Center was created as a healing space for people seeking clarity, connection, and transformation—rooted in nature, grounded in science, and guided by compassion. Our mission is to help individuals reconnect with their inner wisdom so they can move toward a more aligned and intentional life.
We specialize in psychedelic preparation and integration support, as well as microdosing guidance and ongoing coaching. Our approach is holistic and trauma-informed, honoring the mind, body, and spirit. Every client is supported with practical tools, emotional guidance, and a steady, structured container designed to foster meaningful and lasting transformation.
What sets Tierra Sana apart is that this work is deeply personal to me. I’m not just an advocate of natural medicine—I’m someone who has lived through severe depression and anxiety. My own healing journey has profoundly shaped how I support others. I understand the vulnerability it takes to seek help, and I approach each person with empathy, respect, and care. This isn’t just a service; it’s a calling.
I’m also proud to serve the Spanish-speaking community. As a fluent Spanish speaker, I’m able to provide culturally responsive support and help bridge a gap in access to safe, guided psychedelic services.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of building something authentic and heart-centered. The launch of my website and blog represents more than just a business milestone—it’s an educational platform. Through it, I aim to reduce stigma, share accurate information, and help people understand the transformational potential of this work when approached responsibly and intentionally.
Tierra Sana Wellness Center is more than a brand. It’s a space for healing, growth, and empowerment—and I’m honored to be bringing this vision to life.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My biggest advice for anyone just starting out is to be patient with the process. When you’re building something new—especially in an emerging industry—you want clarity right away. You want guarantees. But the truth is, growth happens in layers. There isn’t always a clear roadmap, and that can feel uncomfortable. I’ve learned that consistency and integrity matter more than speed.
I also wish I had known how much mindset plays a role in entrepreneurship. Starting something from the ground up challenges you in ways you don’t expect. It brings up self-doubt, fear, and uncertainty. But it also builds resilience and confidence if you stay committed to your purpose. Having a strong “why” makes all the difference when things feel overwhelming. For me, that includes my family—my wife and kids are a big part of what motivates me to keep building something meaningful and aligned with my values.
Another thing I’ve learned is not to try to do everything alone. Seek mentors. Build community. Ask questions. There’s strength in collaboration, especially in a new and evolving field like this one.
Most importantly, stay aligned with your values. Trends will change, laws will evolve, and opinions will vary—but if you stay grounded in your mission and operate with integrity, you’ll build something that lasts.
Starting out can feel intimidating, but if you’re called to this work, trust that. Take the next step, then the next. You don’t need the entire path mapped out—you just need the courage to begin.
